Welcome to The Press List, our weekly newsletter alerting you to upcoming media events worth knowing about. New York has been hit hard by winter weather and the cold won't be letting up this week, but all of the slush isn't stopping media people from heading out on the town. This week's calendar includes Web site launches, seminars, and mixers for folks who are willing to brave the elements.
Things will get off to a steamy start Tuesday with Self editor-in-chief Lucy Danziger's party for Behind The Bedroom Door, Paula Derrow's collection of sex essays written by women. If you're not in the mood for pillow talk, that same night, social climber Micah Jesse will be hosting a party for his personal Web site. Say what you will about the "socials," but those kids sure do know how to party. Expect Jesse's event to be packed with top-shelf booze and well-dressed eye candy. Also on Tuesday, Michael Wolff continues the media blitz for his Rupert Murdoch biography with an event at the New York Press Club. If you're not yet a media mogul yourself, check out mediabistro.com's "Meet the Teachers" event the next night, where you can mingle with mediabistro.com instructors and enjoy free drinks.
Last week was fairly quiet, as everyone recovered from the end of their holiday vacations and braved re-entry to working (or less-than-working) life. The big event was The New York Times' Arts & Leisure Weekend, which featured discussion with media luminaries including Keith Olbermann and the co-hosts of The View. Choire Sicha checked out the View panel for Jezebel, and reported back that the audience was comprised of "795 middle-aged women, three unhappy straight guys, and two thrilled gay guys." Somehow, we're not too sad that we missed that one.
We'll be off for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day next Monday, but The Press List will be back in force on the 26th to forecast which media events you'll want to know about, along with all that went down at this week's hottest happenings. Be sure to check out 'Conferences, Etc.' and 'Beyond New York' for media events beyond the five boroughs in Chicago, San Francisco, and Boston...
