Take Your Mind Off Taxes With Media Festivities

Week of April 13, 2009

Welcome to The Press List, our weekly newsletter alerting you to upcoming media events worth knowing about. Wednesday is Tax Day, so cut yourself a break: We've got a full lineup of media parties, events, and conferences to help you take your mind off of paperwork and deadlines.

PR professionals and mediaphiles won't want to miss Tuesday's Crisis Communications seminar, where New York Times spokesperson Catherine Mathis and Comcast corporate communications SVP D'Arcy Rudnay will be speaking about social media PR strategies. Later in the week, Rachel Maddow will take the stage at the F5 Festival, where creative types will be discussing art, film, design, and digital media.

On Tuesday, the festivities kick off with Thrillist's third annual pool party -- expect plenty of fleshy blogger antics. Skin should also be on display that night at Inked's book release party for editor Jason Buhrmester's debut novel, Black Dogs: The Possibly True Story of Classic Rock's Greatest Robbery at Angels & Kings. On Wednesday, mediabistro.com's UnBeige blog is teaming up with MoMa to host a celebration of American design at Amalia. If you can't make it to New York, mediabistro.com is also throwing cocktail parties in Philadelphia and Chicago this week.

Last week, we were reminded that nightclubs make awful media party venues. Uptight door staff is one reason to hate club parties: On Wednesday, we tried to stop by Blackbook's anniversary party for the magazine's "Good Night Steve Lewis" column, but Greenhouse, the SoHo party venue, was less than accommodating. We were unable to get there early because the event was scheduled during Passover, but we thought an 11pm arrival wouldn't be a problem since the invite said the party would last until 2 a.m. At Greenhouse, we were told the party was over at 11 -- and overheard regular club guests being charged a $100 minimum bar tab. Those prices and attitude seem pretty outrageous for a small club next to the Holland Tunnel. On Thursday, Paper editor Peter Davis experienced another downside of club parties: overcrowding. Davis was denied entry to the "Beautiful People" party his own magazine threw at Hiro Ballroom because the club was full.

We'll be back next Monday to forecast which upcoming media events you'll want to know about, along with all that went down at the prior week's hottest happenings. Be sure to check out 'Conferences, Etc.' and 'Beyond New York' for media events beyond the five boroughs in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago, and on the West Coast....
