August 7 2:00 pm - 2:45 pm Five Bonehead Errors The Copy Editor Needs to Know How to Fix Join Constance Hale, author of Vex, Hex, Smash, and Smooch, for a keynote how-to session reviewing the five most consistent errors you'll confront as a copy editor. She'll arm you with techniques for editing overuse of static verbs, subject/predicate disagreements, boring verbs, dangling participles, and what your mother and grammar teacher never told you about the passive voice.

August 21 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm Samurai Editing: How to Edit the Work of Non-Writers In this how-to session, Nancy will cover the delicate task of editing letters, editorials, and other prose by non-writers. She'll demonstrate how to clarify what a confused or verbose writer is trying to say, how to do basic fact checking and how to maintain the writer's voice by the time the final edit is completed.
