  • Edit front and back matter for book projects
  • Understand the rules and reasoning behind your grammar corrections
  • Understand expository style -- how and when to recast sentences
  • Consider permissions and legal concerns -- when to flag for libel, fair use, or incorrect terminology

By the end of this course, you will have:

Experience copy editing with AP Style, The Chicago Manual of Style, in-house style guides, and style sheets. Plus, you'll gain an understanding of additional responsibilities that go along with copy editing, such as managing permissions and legal concerns.

The self-paced course includes:

  • A video introduction with instructor Cheryl Della Pietra
  • Five written lessons
  • Three video tutorial lessons and crib sheets
  • Eight assignments and answer keys
  • Two copy tests with style sheets and answer keys
  • Three supplemental videos on grammar and line editing

Cheryl Della Pietra has been a freelancer for Elle, Us Weekly, LIFE, and Fast Company, where she not-so-quietly obsessed over comma splices and misplaced modifiers. She has copyedited at SmartMoney.com and also supervised the copy department at P.O.V. magazine, where she was the research editor. Yearning to have her work copyedited for a change, she has written for Redbook and Marie Claire. Many moons ago, she was Hunter S. Thompson's editorial assistant, a job that honed her margarita-making skills.
