Course Details

For those who wish to create their own column for magazines, newspapers, websites and blogs. This includes samples and discussion of columns on audio tape and in print, of personal essays, political commentary, a variety of humor writing, and features. Enjoyable, low pressure writing exercises developed specifically for this class will be provided.

In this seminar, students can expect to learn:

  • How to promote your services/products through columns.
  • About syndication of work.
  • Interviewing techniques.
  • About marketing different kinds of columns.
  • How to adapt/sell columns for secondary income.

    Brad Schreiber
    Brad Schreiber is the author of What Are You Laughing At?: How to Write Funny Screenplays, Stories and More (Michael Wiese) and four other books. He's been an arts and culture journalist for Entertainment Today since 1995 and he has also written for Daily Variety, Huffington Post, and has won awards from the National Press Foundation, the Edward Albee Foundation, the California Writers Club and other organizations. Brad is Vice President of Storytech Literary Consulting, founded by Christopher Vogler, and teaches at writers' conferences in the U.S., Canada and Europe. He created the Court TV series North Mission Road, inspired by his book on the L.A. Coroner, Death in Paradise. In the past, Schreiber has been a writer-producer and executive for KCET-TV (PBS) and head of development for film/TV director Jonathan Kaplan. He has also written for the stage, radio, television, magazines, Web sites, and once had to write for a national phone line called Dial-An-Insult but is not particularly proud of that.
