Newspaper and magazine arts sections may be the sexiest arts writing gigs, but they aren't the only game in town. There's another way to earn a decent buck and fuel your burning passion for writing about culture: nonprofits.

Nonprofits are a huge market ripe with low-hanging fruit for savvy writers and editors to pick from. There are a whopping 1,200 nonprofit arts and culture organizations in New York City alone?from museums to performing arts groups to advocacy organizations?all of which need some kind of content creation. Nonprofits are always in need of writers and editors who know the arts to create monthly newsletters, event catalogues, season brochures, websites and more. Whether you're interested in a staff position or freelance work, this three-hour seminar will reveal the breadth of work that's out there and how to break in, as well as dispel common myths such as nonprofits don't pay.

In this seminar, you'll also discover:

  • The lay of the nonprofit land: the culture of nonprofits is revealed, including how they hire and what they spend money on
  • How to pinpoint organizations that hire freelancers and those that hire full-timers
  • Which tools and skills will help you land work
  • How to pitch yourself and your skills to the right person
  • How to network your way to regular assignments and/or full-time work
  • Ways your work with nonprofits can generate story ideas to pitch to newspapers and magazines

Testimonials

Fern Glazer is an excellent teacher. She was well-prepared, informative and very responsive to the individual needs of each person in the class. I highly recommend this course to anyone interested in moving from writing in other fields to writing for NFPs. --Nancy J. Brandwein

"As a freelance writer looking to make the transition from corporate to cultural, Fern Glazer's seminar provided me with everything I need, from strategies to contacts to inspiration. Fern is an insightful and enthusiastic speaker, and she tailored her presentation to meet the needs of each person in the audience. It was an evening well-spent." -- Mary Moreno, freelancer

"Fern Glazer's seminar is loaded with valuable information, practical tips, and up-to-date resources. Her own first-hand experience is inspiring and one of her suggestions has already paid off! Writers looking to gain insight into the wealth of opportunities available in the seemingly miserly world of nonprofits will truly benefit from the experience." -- Jeanne Finestone, Ananta Media

"I think last night's class was really outstanding. Maybe because it met my needs almost exactly, I came away with pages of notes, some of which I passed along to a friend this morning. Fern Glazer is a great teacher; the course is not about her, but about the information, and she's very generous about passing along her insights as well as the facts." -- Carolyn Jackson

"Fern Glazer was excellent, warm, friendly, informed, and thorough. I appreciated the way she listened to each person's questions and included each person's situation in their material." -- Roberta Hershenson
