Course Details

Whether you're a seasoned freelancer looking to supplement your current income or a newbie looking to gain the experience needed to make it in consumer publications, trades are a large, fast-growing segment of the publishing industry worth tapping.

In this seminar, you'll learn what trades are and how they differ from consumer rags, how to find these often-elusive titles (tip: they're rarely available on newsstands), tricks for breaking in, and how to become a regular contributor. Plus, by the end of the class you'll have the beginnings of a pitch and/or introductory letter designed to get your foot in the door.

In this seminar, you'll also discover:

  • What trade editors want and how to give it to them
  • How to find and effectively interview business and industry professionals
  • Time management tools that help you maximize your fee
  • How to leverage your existing knowledge into an "expertise"
  • How to use your trade research and contacts to generate story ideas to pitch to consumer publications
    and much more...

Testimonials

Fern Glazer is an excellent teacher. She was well-prepared, informative and very responsive to the individual needs of each person in the class. I highly recommend this course to anyone interested in moving from writing in other fields to writing for NFPs. --Nancy J. Brandwein

"As a freelance writer looking to make the transition from corporate to cultural, Fern Glazer's seminar provided me with everything I need, from strategies to contacts to inspiration. Fern is an insightful and enthusiastic speaker, and she tailored her presentation to meet the needs of each person in the audience. It was an evening well-spent." -- Mary Moreno, freelancer

"Fern Glazer's seminar is loaded with valuable information, practical tips, and up-to-date resources. Her own first-hand experience is inspiring and one of her suggestions has already paid off! Writers looking to gain insight into the wealth of opportunities available in the seemingly miserly world of nonprofits will truly benefit from the experience." -- Jeanne Finestone, Ananta Media

"I think last night's class was really outstanding. Maybe because it met my needs almost exactly, I came away with pages of notes, some of which I passed along to a friend this morning. Fern Glazer is a great teacher; the course is not about her, but about the information, and she's very generous about passing along her insights as well as the facts." -- Carolyn Jackson

"Fern Glazer was excellent, warm, friendly, informed, and thorough. I appreciated the way she listened to each person's questions and included each person's situation in their material." -- Roberta Hershenson
