Course Details

You're trying to write and hold a paying job, but the creative work isn't really getting done. Perhaps you write for a living, but wish you had more time for a life. Maybe you manage to juggle writing and a personal life, but you're too anxious to enjoy it. You know you should "write every day" and "be disciplined," but you feel like you're not making the best use of your time or reaching your goals. You're familiar with the cycle of optimism, distraction, and regret. Is there any other way? This course is a step-by-step guide to building a sane, productive writing practice.

In this seminar, you can expect to learn how to:
  • Motivate yourself before a deadline looms
  • Get the most writing out of whatever time you have
  • Establish a daily practice without becoming a pillar of discipline or a perfect angel
  • Convert feedback from workshops, editors, or reviewers into practical, non-discouraging direction you can use
  • Prevent writers' anxiety and depression before they take hold
  • Refill the creative well, to make writing flow enjoyably day after day
  • Intensify your practice to reach your writing goals

Greg Lichtenberg
Greg Lichtenberg is a writer of literary fiction and memoir, a co-writer of popular nonfiction, a husband, a father, and a confirmed believer that writing doesn't require giving up the rest of your life. The author of the memoir Playing Catch with My Mother, Greg's essays and fiction have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Fence, and Dragonfire. He has collaborated on books about yoga and meditation, life coaching, management consulting, and other topics. A graduate of both the Iowa Writers Workshop (in fiction) and Iowa's Program in Nonfiction Writing, he has received a James Michener/Copernicus Society Writing Fellowship, as well as The University of Iowa's Award for Outstanding Teaching. In 2006, on the basis of his novel in progress Else, Greg received a Chapter One Prize and fellowships from the Jerome Foundation and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.

Testimonials

Greg dissolved the myths and demystified the discipline of writing, giving me a new freedom to write. By working in smaller blocks of time, I found that more work actually gets done. -- Ken Kraus, former student

"This approach helped me dissolve the notion that "tortured" and "artist" are inexorably bound. I've gained both physical and mental awareness of myself while I write, and have identified actionable ways to make the time I am able to devote to writing far more productive and meaningful." -- Heather McKim, former student

"I recently took Greg Lichtenberg's class. I've taken a few mediabistro classes but this was by far the best. The class was small, which was nice, but it was Greg who brought us together -- all of us with frustrations in our writing. He made us relax, breathe and think, and he made us realize that it is possible to actually get our work done. I've been using his method since class ended and I really think he's on to something. I can't recommend him enough and would gladly recommend him to others." -- Amy Squires, director, video production

"I took Greg Lichtenberg's class, "Stick With It," and as a result, I'm the most inspired I've been all year. He gave me concrete ways to improve my approach to writing. The ideas are still mine, he just removed some obstacles to getting at them. Thanks for offering the class." -- Alex Orban, coordinator, Good Films, Inc.

"I absolutely loved Greg Lichtenberg's "Stick With It" seminar. So much of what he said resonated with my experience and with things I know I need to do in my writing (and my life). I admired Greg's relaxed manner combined with serious focus. The three hours felt full of important ideas, even more substantive than I'd expected. I've done his exercise for three days now, and I noticed a difference right away: more present, less distracted, with promising moments of clarity. It feels, not like trying out some "three-easy-steps" new trick that's supposed to change everything, but like rediscovering something I'd lost." -- Anne Barthel, freelancer

"Greg Lichtenberg's workshop has taught me to reevaluate my former work habits. He has emphasized the importance of peace and tranquility when writing and has given the people participating in his workshop the tools to create a less frantic and more productive working pace." -- Jere Herzenberg, former student

"Whether you are just beginning a project or are further along, Greg Lichtenberg offers uncanny strategies and exercises to help you balance your output?and your psyche?as you get it all done. This is real-time writing help that really works." -- Claudia Valentino, former student
