Course Details

Learn the basics of what it takes to be a good television news reporter including: piece structuring, writing a killer script, delivering a live report, setting up and conducting on-camera interviews, and more. If you have a background in print journalism (or even if you don't), this class will give you the fundamentals to pursue a career in television journalism.

With help from camera operators, editors, and producers, students will visit a tv studio, where they will record individual news casts. In addition, each student will also be taped doing a "stand up," which is a "live from the scene" kind of visual report.

In this class, you can expect to learn how to:
  • Write a compelling script
  • Set up feature pieces
  • Turn a print article into a good television piece
  • Understand the video editing process
  • Deliver a good "standup"
  • Learn to tell a good TV package from a bad one
  • Film a feature or breaking news story
By the end of this class, students can expect to have:
Two taped appearances.

Admission Requirements:
Please submit a letter of interest (including a brief work history) and your desired outcome for this class. No writing sample required.

Manoush Zomorodi
Manoush Zomorodi is a reporter, anchor, and host. Her stories air on Reuters Television and the BBC, and she presents many of mediabistro.com's on-demand videos. She also specializes in on-camera media training and has coached city officials, authors, and print journalists. Most recently she moderated the first Mediabistro Circus, a 2-day conference on new technology and the media.
