Course Details

Join Wendalyn Nichols, editor of Copy Editor newsletter and former editorial director of Random House Reference, as she leads a full-day workshop designed to help you hone your editorial skills! This year's workshop focuses on the grammar, usage, and style issues that continue to trip up even the most seasoned editors.

The 2005 workshops were our most successful ever. For 2006, we've focused on the most popular content from the 2005 workshops, adding lots more opportunities for interaction and practice.

In this class, you can expect to learn:

  • Handy tricks for remembering some of the stickier rules
  • How to adjust your level of "interference" in a document, depending on the type of text and the target audience
  • What kind of error to query and what to just fix
  • The best print and online resources for grammar, usage, and style guidance
  • How to make judgment calls with confidence when your usage and style manuals offer conflicting advice

The day includes practical editing exercises and test cases, and the opportunity to discuss your choices with your peers and the workshop leader.

A special bonus for all attendees!

One attendee at each workshop will receive a copy of Garner's Modern American Usage, worth $40, and a copy of Barbara Wallraff's latest book, Word Fugitives, worth $15. A second attendee will win a CD of a 2006 Copy Editor audio conference, worth $189.

Admission Requirements:
Basic familiarity with copyediting. (You needn't be a full-time copy editor.)

Testimonials

Wendalyn Nichols was Superb! She offered a wealth of knowledge about words, style, and editing while sharing inside info about what's happening in the profession of copyediting. To my surprise, class length seemed just right. I didn't anticipate a day's lecture/conversation on this subject would keep me fully interested--and awake--yet that was precisely my experience. -- Laura Zimmerman
