Course Details

Frustrated by how long it takes to come up with a good book idea? Learn how editors and book packagers think, and you will soon be selling a book a year, or more! In fact, your seminar instructor, Jennifer Basye Sander, a former Random House senior editor, and the co-author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting Published, sold six new book projects last year.

Have you ever heard something on the news and thought, "Hey, that would make a good book! But how?" Or spotted a hole in the market for a particular type of book but weren't sure how to proceed? Learn how to take those ideas and make them real. Be warned – this is not a class about talent, creativity, or originality. This class is a down-and-dirty look at how you can ramp up your output and increase your income from publishing projects. After just three hours you will be turning the world around you into book ideas that sell and sell.

In this class you can expect to learn:

  • How to determine the marketability of an idea
  • Techniques to develop ideas quickly
  • How to sell books you won't have to write
  • How to turn trends into books
  • What packagers do, and how to become one

Jennifer Sander
Jennifer Basye Sander has been creating successful book products since 1983, the day she published her first book, The Sacramento Women's Yellow Pages, as a way of escaping a failing career in California politics. Since that day, she has worked in all aspects of the book publishing business, everything from book retailing to book publicity, from authoring New York Times bestselling books herself, to acquiring them for a large trade publisher.
The books that she has developed have achieved in excess of forty million dollars in retail sales. As the senior editor and chief book developer for Prima Publishing, she developed over seventy new titles. Her most successful book ideas were the Cozy Series of gift-sized cookbooks (over 500,000 copies in print) and the 101 Home Based Businesses for Women series (over 400,000 copies in print). She is also the author, co-author, or ghostwriter of more than a twenty books herself, including the recent gift book hits Wear More Cashmere and The Martini Diet.
