Teenage girls are interested in makeup, clothes, their friends, and, of course, boys. But there's a lot more going on in today's teenagers' lives. The teen years are a time of insecurity and influence, and girls are looking to outside sources to let them know everything from how to interact with friends to what to wear. This country is about to see the largest population of teenagers since the baby boom era. Teens look to magazines for help and advice. If you can bring yourself back to what it's like to be a teen —- the anguish, the fear, and the insecurity -— you'll have a leg up on writing for a teen magazine. You also need to keep current on what's going on in their world. The pressure of growing up too fast has led to a host of problems, and they're not necessarily the same problems you experienced. Instructor Bio
Meredith Berlin has spent the last 25 years in the magazine business as a writer, editor, editor-in-chief, and editorial consultant. In 1997 she was named editor-in-chief of Seventeen magazine. She later served as editorial development director of Primedia. In 1979 she was named editor-in-chief of Soap Opera Digest, making her the youngest magazine editor-in-chief at that time.
She has co-created many new titles, special issues, and launches for major magazine companies including News Corp., Time, Meredith, and Reader's Digest. She also co-produced Seventeen's television special on the WB network and launched the first Seventeen volunteerism awards, honoring the exceptional work of teenage girls.
