Course Details

So you recently landed a great job as an editorial assistant and have gotten your foot in the door of book publishing. You're on a path to the plum editorial job you've dreamed of but distinguishing yourself from other smart, eager assistants is hard. There's tough competition for few editorial jobs. Who makes it and who doesn't seems so mysterious. Until now.

The first year of your job as an editorial assistant is key in positioning yourself for the future. This course will teach you how to plan the early stages of your career to maximize your time as an assistant and acquire the skills you need for promotion. It will give you a leg up on your competition for the editorial job you've always wanted. You'll get inside tips on what book editors really look for when deciding whom to promote, learn how best to position yourself so you get the promotion rather than someone else, and discover how to create opportunities to expand your job responsibilities and make yourself indispensable. If you've ever wondered why the former editorial assistant down the hall is now an editor and you aren't, this is the class for you.

In this seminar, you can expect to learn:

  • The business culture and skills it takes to be a great editor
  • How to analyze the job you currently have or want to determine whether it can lead to a promotion
  • The single most important attribute of assistants who get promoted
  • How to talk to your boss about increased job responsibilities
  • The best and worst editorial situations for an entry-level job if you want to become an editor
  • How to know when your chances for promotion have ended and it is time to move on

Testimonials

"Deborah's seminar on Editorial Assistants to Editors was terrific! I found her highly knowledgeable, and the information she gave was really helpful. She was accurate in her assessment that there is so much information, which is necessary to know but isn't always readily accessible. It was good to learn from someone who is in her position." -- Jennifer Christie, publicity assistant, Lee & Low Books

I thought Deborah's seminar was great. I was a little worried about sitting at a table for a 3-hour discussion, but the time went by quickly and everything that Deborah told us was very relevant, interesting, and helpful. It was definitely the best seminar that I've attended related to my field. I would reccommend this seminar to anyone interested in getting ahead in the publishing world. -- Candace Braun, editorial assistant, Princeton University Press
