Course Details

Everyone has a story about life in the city. Learn to craft your quirky, funny, sad, dark, or otherwise unique urban tales into marketable short stories, memoirs, or novels. In this class, you will read a wide range of books set in the city, from Piri Thomas' groundbreaking memoir about coming of age on the streets of Spanish Harlem, Down These Mean Streets; to Junot Diaz's vividly evocative collection of urban stories, Drown; to Adrian Nicole LeBlanc's critically acclaimed nonfiction book about the intertwined lives of two girls in the Bronx, Random Family. Through class discussions and author visits, you will learn how and why these books shine as paragons of urban literature.

Each week you will write your own urban stories using the book we are discussing as a jumping-off point.
If you've been thinking about writing a city story but you're not sure how to get started, this informative, fun, and inspiring class is for you.

In this class, you can expect to learn:

  • How to shape your urban idea or experience into a story
  • How to get deeper into your character's (or your own) mind
  • Which urban books work, and why
  • Secrets of celebrated authors' success -- straight from some of the authors themselves!
  • How to scour the city for inspiration for your own writing

By the end of class, students can expect to have:
The beginnings of at least six new stories, valuable feedback from a book editor at a major publishing house, a collection of some of the best urban books out there, and a fresh perspective on ways to effectively use an urban setting in their writing.

Admission Requirements:
Please send a letter of interest (including a brief work history) and a writing sample (less than 2,000 words).
