What brings your attention to a cause? Of all the organizations addressing a cause such as hunger or literacy, how do you decide which has the programs for which you want to donate or volunteer? Nonprofit organizations need people to help explain their causes and programs to the public. They employ writers to help write newsletters, web copy, and brochures that tell the stories of clients, inform people about their cause, or report on the status of their programs. A writer might help explain how, for example, a stream cleanup program preserves the habitat of animals, provides educational opportunities for children, and results in a 50% reduction in toxicity levels in one year.

This class will explore the writing opportunities available with nonprofit organizations for staffers or freelancers, and what you need to know about how nonprofits work.

In this seminar, you'll learn how to:
  • Make donors and volunteers feel part of the community and the cause
  • Find stories about clients' lives
  • Find statistics and research about programs and effectiveness
  • How to give readers information they can use in their own lives (as clients, as opposed to donors)
