In fact, some magazines are all about the photo, so the job of the photo editor is not only more demanding and more important, but it's also more exciting than ever before. The most successful photo editors combine creativity, organization, business savvy, and people skills to get the photo that makes the reader stop, buy the magazine, and read the article. This course will teach you everything you need to know to be one of the top photo editors in the industry.

We'll discuss how photo editors fit into the bigger picture of both the magazine and photo industry. Learn why photo departments are different from magazine to magazine, how what you do depends on where you work, and why some magazines don't have a photo editor at all. Learn how to look for staff jobs, how to successfully market yourself as a freelancer, and how to read the trades to figure out when there might be a photo editor opening.

Susan Isaak Wahl
Susan Isaak Wahl is a freelance photo editor and shoot producer in New York with more than ten years of experience in the magazine industry. Susan worked as the photography director of Self magazine and as the photo editor of Men's Health. She has also worked for Babytalk magazine, FaheyO'Connor, Entertainment Weekly, and Roger Black Consulting. Her work as a photo editor has been recognized by the Society of Publication Designers, Communication Arts, and American Photography. Susan received a BFA in photography from the University of Michigan and worked as a photographer's assistant before becoming a photo editor. She lives in Manhattan with her husband and daughter.
