Course Details

Successful freelance writing is all about exploiting the niche you know best. Since being queer makes you an instant expert in LGBT life –- and society is more compelled by the subject than ever before –- now is the perfect time to focus on how to sell some big gay stories to some big gay (and not-so-gay) newspapers, magazines, and websites.

In this seminar, you'll learn:

  • An overview of the market, including major gay publications, gay community newspapers, party papers, the lesbian press, alternative newsweeklies, culture websites and mainstream publications that are interested in queer stories.

  • A discussion of what to pitch to which publication, with a focus on personal essays, profiles, feature stories and news items.

  • A look at gay sub-topics –- sex, travel, politics, music and arts –- and where to pitch what.

  • How to strike the right tone –- and avoid the wrong one –- for the venue you're targeting.
