These days, much media—everything from music, to radio shows, to TV shows—can be downloaded and consumed on portable devices such as iPods and mp3 players.  It's so popular that even old-school content producers like NPR and The New York Times, and the major TV networks (such as E!, ESPN, and CNN) are offering podcasts on their websites.  If you've dreamed of having your own music, talk radio, or journalistic radio show—or even if you want to produce a radio drama, now's the time to do it.  Just as blogs have given writers a chance to publish their work on the internet, podcasts have made it easy for DJs, journalists, and creative writers to have their voices heard.  Simply put: Not everyone can get radio time these days, so take the do-it-yourself route and get your work out there.

In this class you will learn:
  • What it means to "podcast"
  • About the tools needed to record your podcast, including microphones and recording software
  • How to record your podcast
  • About using music in your podcasts, and how to record your own music
  • About licensing and copyright laws, and when to use release forms for talent and music
  • How to manage your podcast files
  • How to publish your podcasts, and have others can access your podcasts, via RSS feeds and on iTunes
  • Where to find resources on the internet

By the end of class, students will be able to:
Record, create, and publish their own podcasts

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of Macintosh Software and operating System 10X. Some knowledge of downloading and uploading files needed.

Grant Baciocco
In 2004, Grant Baciocco, who has a theater background, created The Radio Adventures of Dr. Floyd, a radio show in the style of those "glory days of radio" serials. He wanted to create a show that would be fun for kids and adults and, perhaps, be educational, too. With the advent of podcasting, it seemed like a very suitable medium for the Dr Floyd show. Grant has been writing, producing and performing in the Dr. Floyd podcast, currently in it's fourth season, for the past 2 years, and is considered one of the "First" to explore this new medium. Grant's program is on iTunes, and, on Mondays, on the Radio Show "Fill in the Blank," which broadcasts over the internet.
