Course Details

Everybody wants to write fiction. This class will help you write good short fiction through a classic workshop style, but it will also take the extra steps to show you how to get your words out there.

Students will read their work aloud, critique each other, and learn about the importance of a good live presentation in today's fiction world. The class will also learn about the mysterious world of publishing short fiction in magazines and online, and how to take it to the next step, publishing a book.

It really is possible to get paid for your fiction. We'll discuss the various outlets for publishing new work, the world of MFA programs, and the world of editors and agents alike.

In this class, you can expect to learn:

  • How to write effective short fiction
  • How to present your fiction live, as a reading
  • How to send fiction out for publication in an effective, non-time-wasting way
  • How and where to locate the best outlets for your fiction writing

By the end of this class, you can expect to have:

  • Two pieces of short fiction
  • An improved sense of how to read your work aloud
  • An understanding of what it takes to publish short fiction and books

    Admission Requirements:
Please submit a letter of interest (including a brief work history) and a writing sample (less than 2,000 words).
