Course Details

This class will focus on the practice of prose writing based on three basic principles: learning to read as a writer, a weekly two-page writing exercise designed to exhibit and broaden your range, and finally longer works that students will present for an in-depth discussion. Some class time will be spent on brief writing assignments to illustrate particular forms and show how a writer can actually 'rest' in a form.

The goal is for students not to become dependent on a teacher or authority, but to value and foster their work while protecting the creative process from inappropriate intrusion. Through these means the writer will understand that the word author is contained in the word authority. Discussion will be centered on observations and the recognition of rhetorical techniques gleaned from across genres of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Focus of discussions will emphasize what is actually observable on the page, veering away from visceral responses and opinions.

Admission Requirements:
Please send a letter of interest (including a brief work history) and a writing sample (less than 2,000 words).
