Course Details

Why have your story or column run in only one newspaper (and only get paid by that one paper) when you could have it appear in several or even hundreds of newspapers? Welcome to the world of newspaper syndication. Newspapers syndicate everything from political and gossips columns to how-to features and comic strips. As newspaper publishers slash staffs and freelance budgets, editors often turn to cost-effective syndicated features. And companies are always looking for new talent to try to sell to editors. If you've ever read a stodgy political op-ed piece or an off-the-mark advice column and thought, "I could do better than that," this seminar is for you.

In this seminar, you will learn:

  • How traditional newspaper syndication works
  • How syndicated writers are paid
  • What newspaper syndicates are looking for, and the best way to pitch them
  • What makes a column or comic widely syndicated
  • What to expect next
  • Ways to get occasional work syndicated

Testimonials

After attending Mark's seminar on syndicated column writing, I followed his advice and launched my own online column, Dear Lizzie. Mark said that the best way to pitch to a syndicator is to brand yourself, and to prove that you will be sustainable. I decided to launch online as a testing ground. Once the column has generated enough buzz, I will pitch the column to syndicators. -- Elizabeth A. Grant, freelance writer
