Course Details

Learn what gets published (and what doesn't!) at this one-of-a-kind panel discussion, which culminates in a Pitch Slam! If you want to publish your novel, cookbook, nonfiction book, or children's book, you have to first learn how to get your manuscript or book proposal read...and not pushed to the bottom of a slush pile.

Face it: Editors and agents won't know how brilliant your book is if they don't get to read it in the first place! And how do they know if they want to read it? By your pitch, of course. You have less than a minute to make an impression on an editor or agent, so learn how to hone your pitching skills and hop on the publication wagon.

But the expansive discussion is not even the best part: Following the discussion, up to 25 authors will have the opportunity to get up on the stage and give a 60-second pitch for their books to the panel. The panel will tell the pitchers why the book is either brilliant or completely unpublishable (but in a very nice way, we promise). Think of it as American Idol or prospective authors.

If that weren't enough, we're also throwing in a copy of two of our panelists' book on getting published.* Both authors, one a successful literary agent, they'll make sure you leave the panel with the tools to be able to publish your book...with success.

Panelists include:

  • Gabriel Barillas, sales representative, HarperCollins
  • Arielle Eckstut, agent, Levine Greenberg Literary Agency; co-author, Putting your Passion into Print: Get Your Book Published Succeessfully (Workman 2005); author, Pride and Promiscuity: The Lost Sex Scenes of Jane Austen (Canongate 2002)
  • David Henry Sterry, co-author, Putting your Passion into Print: Get Your Book Published Succeessfully (Workman 2005); author, Chicken: Self-Portrait of a Man for Rent (Regan, 2002), among others
  • Ken Wilson, Los Angeles-based media escort since 1981 (Mickey Spillane, Captain Kangaroo, James Patterson, among others); media/author talent booker; grassroots guerilla marketer

...and more to come!
