Creative writers are notoriously resistant to being edited. What if it's your job to edit them?

Publishers of books and magazines often relax their house style when it comes to fiction manuscripts and short stories. It can even seem as if the rules are suspended for particular authors or genres. At the same time, clear guidelines on which rules to bend are often not given to copy editors, who in turn are being asked to take on more substantive editing responsibilities. But there are ways to approach editing fiction that satisfy both the publisher and the writer, while leaving the copy editor's sanity intact. This audio conference will tell you how.

To take part in the audio conference, you simply dial in to a toll-free number. Wendalyn Nichols, editor of Copy Editor newsletter, will share her strategies for editing books and articles by creative writers, and there will be plenty of time for your questions.

In this audio conference, you will learn:

  • Points of consistency to watch out for that are unique to editing fiction
  • How to write queries that help rather than alienate the author
  • When to be insistent about house style, and when to be more flexible
  • Which genres and formats require the lightest editorial touch
  • Common fact-checking problems, and what to do about them
  • What to prioritize when you aren't given enough time to be as thorough as you'd like
  • When "copyediting" is really line editing, and how to estimate a per-page work rate that reflects this difference

Testimonials

Wendalyn Nichols was Superb! She offered a wealth of knowledge about words, style, and editing while sharing inside info about what's happening in the profession of copyediting. To my surprise, class length seemed just right. I didn't anticipate a day's lecture/conversation on this subject would keep me fully interested--and awake--yet that was precisely my experience. -- Laura Zimmerman
