Being able to provide well written, reliable recipes can exponentially increase a food writer's value to an editor. Enliven and perfect your recipe writing skills in this 1-day workshop. Whether you are a food writer looking to increase your marketability, are a chef who is looking to expand or transition into food writing, or are a home cook who simply wants to collect your own or someone else's recipes for family and friends to enjoy, this workshop will give you the knowledge and tools you need to create tempting and usable recipes.

This workshop is chock full of tips, handouts, lists of resources, and short in-class exercises to help you put what you learn into practice. Students should bring three recipe ideas to class. They will leave with a clear sense of how to turn them into publishable, cook-able recipes.

In this class, you will learn:

  • Standard practices for recipe writing
  • Concrete steps for recipe testing
  • How to adopt house recipe styles
  • How to turn chefs' write-ups and demonstrations into publishable material
  • How to know if a recipe is really yours
  • Principles for creating menus
  • How to make your recipe prose as engaging as the rest of your story
  • Ways to build stories around recipes

Admission Requirements
Please submit a letter of interest (including a brief work history).
