But in order to flourish in the business, you must have a range of specialized knowledge and skills, including impeccable grammar, spelling, and punctuation, great people skills, and QuarkXPress or InDesign. This three-hour seminar will tell you all you need to know about starting your copy editing career.

In this seminar, you will learn:

  • The difference between copy editing and proofreading
  • How to brush up on your grammar, spelling, and punctuation skills
  • Grammatical pitfalls: misplaced modifiers, collective nouns, and other tricky situations
  • How to make copy punchy and crisp whether for front of book or feature articles
  • How to package a piece of editorial
  • How to incorporate images, captions and sidebars into your pages, keeping in mind word count and layout
  • How to develop a copy editing resume and finding work as a copy editor
  • What to expect once you get a job

Michael Clements
Michael Clements is the executive editor of Washington Life magazine, Washington's premier luxury lifestyle publication. He oversees the editorial and creative teams, page production, and overall look and feel of the magazine. He is also heavily involved in strategic partnerships, event coordination, and is executive producer for the newly formed WLTV. Previously, Michael worked as managing editor for Power Magazine in Beverly Hills. As managing editor, he helped build the custom publishing house m8 Publishing in Hong Kong.

Michael is also a singer/songwriter; has held art exhibits for his paintings in Hong Kong, Shanghai, LA and D.C., and has acted in theatre, television and film in both Hong Kong and Los Angeles.
