Course Details

Make the short-attention spans of magazine readers work for you by mastering the fine art of writing for the front of book. Short articles are in demand more than ever as magazines trade in lengthy features for snack-sized news and trend items. Whether you're a junior editor looking for more clips or a freelancer eager to double your assignments, this seminar will show you why front of book is the place to cash in.

But short doesn't mean simple. This seminar will teach you to spot irresistible ideas, pinpoint a magazine outlet, and produce witty, concise text that packs a punch. We'll explore nontraditional ways to present stories, plus how to use a FOB idea to amp up a feature pitch.

In this seminar, you will learn:

  • How to spot a FOB idea and how to differentiate between that and a feature idea
  • How to use magazine back issues to guide your pitch
  • How to write dynamically in limited space
  • Words and phrases that appeal to editors
  • How to pitch editors
  • How to package your story creatively
