Course Details

Even in an ever-changing media climate, magazine publishing continues to grow. In fact, more new magazines launched in the first quarter of 2009 than in the previous two years. If you've always had an interest in magazines, and wondered how successful magazines are launched and continue to thrive, this course is for you.

We will cover all job opportunities within the editorial and business sides of consumer magazines. This class will be extremely interactive and hands-on. Industry guests from major publishing houses, as well as clients, will join us to share perspectives on content, selling, and the buying and marketing of magazines. Learn how to create buzz with effective marketing, promotion, and public relations. Learn how circulation numbers relate to building a subscription and newsstand base.

We will also cover the financial responsibilities of editorial and advertising to turn a profit within a business plan. We'll talk about creating an audience, media buy, and target consumer for agencies and clients. We will also look at ways to obtain new revenue streams through online, promotions, events, and strategic partnerships.

In this class, you will learn:

  • How a magazine works, from the ground up
  • How to make a magazine sell
  • How to integrate sales, marketing, and editorial
  • The importance of circulation and research when attracting advertisers
  • Integrated marketing -- blogging, emails, and traditional promos
  • How to start a magazine
  • The business side of magazine publishing
  • What makes a magazine successful or not

By the end of this class, you will have:
A mock-up and business plan for your own magazine.

Katherine Rizzuto has worked in magazine publishing for over 20 years, most recently as associate publisher at InStyle and Instyle.com. Prior to this, she was associate publisher at Fitness and Brides magazine and publisher at Marie Claire, Fitness, and the Conde Nast Bridal Group. She began her career at SSC&B advertising as a media buyer and has held advertising sales positions at YM, Seventeen, and Womans Day.
