Course Details

New York City is the media capital of the world. All of the biggest film, television, print, and advertising firms are headquartered here. But did you know that most of the creative action ? filmmaking, designing, production, writing ? is done by or for small businesses? Some of the most creative and best-known media are being produced by companies with only a handful of people. And most of these companies were started by young and hungry professionals with very little business experience.

Do you have a million dollar idea that won?t leave you alone? Do you have a talent that could serve many more folks than your current stable of vendors? Are you sick of living an Office Space life? If so, it just might be time for you to start your own company.

In this seminar, you'll learn all the things you need to know to go out on your own, including:

  • Who should start their own business (it isn't for everyone).
  • Why you should start your own business.
  • The benefits of incorporating vs. freelancing or working for a bigger firm.
  • The challenges of working for yourself.
  • How to incorporate.
  • Setting up the company: finding office space, finding a lawyer, getting an accountant, getting a business bank account, learning business software.
  • Making your company seem and feel real ? to others and to yourself.
  • How to get your first client.
  • Dealing with contracts.
  • How to market your company and grow without going broke.
  • Finding a good partner and hiring good staff.
  • The mental and emotional challenges of working for yourself.
  • Resources and support systems.
