Travel writing is a competitive field that demands not only a mastery of the form, but an understanding of the media landscape &ndash;- and how to stand out against the competition. In this course, learn how you can maximize print and online writing opportunities to establish your authority as a travel writer. We&rsquo;ll review the fundamentals of successful travel writing and how to create the kinds of articles and essays that get the attention of top travel publications and websites. With the guidance of James Sturz, Vanity Fair staffer-turned author, students will dissect the anatomy of travel pieces, from travel-related news items to service round-ups to personal essays. Each week, you&rsquo;ll produce an article and pitch letter, and will be expected to investigate unfamiliar neighborhoods, seek out experts in the field, and demonstrate the highest levels of research and reporting. Students will have the option to create a travel blog or website showcasing their work. In this class, you will learn:\n\nThe anatomy of a successful travel writing piece and pitch\n\nHow to use where you live to break into the travel market\n\nHow to find and develop your beat\n\nWhat to do when you get to your destination\n\nHow to make travel a conduit to writing beyond the travel section\n\nHow to present your work to an online audience\n\nBy the end of class, you will have: A complete portfolio of eight publishable articles and pitch letters to match that will impress any editor.
