David Hopkins

Professional/Personal Overview
I love to immerse myself in a subject and find the offbeat perspective. I've profiled a reclusive burlesque dancer from the 1960s. I've stalked the mayor of Dallas for a local magazine (disclaimer: no mayors were harmed). I've written about renaissance faires and nonprofit law firms, abandoned malls and the zombie apocalypse. Before working as a full-time freelance writer, I wrote comic books and graphic novels in a variety of genres. For twelve years, I taught English and Creative Writing, and I served as a writing coach for interscholastic competitions. I once wrestled a mountain lion. I've had experience working with artists, working with teams, and working alone. Ultimately, I love a good story wherever it might be.

These two may have the Hollywood look and attitude, but not everything ran smoothly at first. With Bad Kids Go to Hell, we may have a first--a movie idea that turned into an independent comic book that turned back into a movie.

CitySquare does every thing it can to help the poor of Dallas. When the organization created the LAW Center, CitySquare found where it could make its greatest impact.

When viewed as an immigrant story, a story about people adapting to the new world, our protagonist in The Walking Dead is not the person you think it is.
(D Magazine, 10/1/2011)
A dying mall is not just an artifact of a struggling economy; it is a reminder of your own mortality. As part of D Magazine's "letter from" series, I reflect on the last gasp of Six Flags Mall.
(D Magazine, 3/1/2011)
The city has seen a resurgence in the playful art of striptease. Meet one of the pioneers.

Spider-man plans to keep his secret identity from his own wife? Now this is a superhero who’s serious about maintaining a secret identity.
(Smart Pop Books, 5/1/2006)
Forget a deeper postmodern critique of the superhero as a reconstruction of masculine language systems. I want to know how Superman doesn't kill people when he hits them.

Describe your dream assignment
Scene: I answer the phone. "David?" "Hello, highly-respected and innovative magazine." "Would you like to follow a group of Vaudeville performers around for a few months? Write whatever you observe. 10,000 words. Sound good?" "Yes, it does. I'll get to work on that right now." I hang up the phone and do a little celebration dance. End scene.
