Denise Grollmus

Professional/Personal Overview
An adventurous and award-winning journalist always on the hunt for a quirky tale. I've covered everything from binge drinking Amish girls to mercenary boxers. I'm comfortable spinning long form narratives on tight deadlines, thanks to four years of pounding the pavement for a Village Voice Media weekly. I'm a thorough reporter, unafraid to tackle any assignment, whether it be an investigative piece about corrupt judges or a celebrity profile. My greatest strength is getting my subjects to let me into their lives. I love extracting the extraordinary from the seemingly ordinary. I also have a particularly strong background in music feature writing. In 2006, my story "Sex Thief" (see below) was selected by Mark Bowden for HarperCollin's Best American Crime Writing. I'm currently working on a book about the Ohio Knitting Mills for Workman/Artisan Publishing as well as a non-fiction novel about the Twister Sisters, two Minnesotan women who spend their time chasing storms.
