"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones

Jaffe on Milbank: Will He Have Any More Friends Left?

Harry Jaffe takes a look at Dana Milbank's forthcoming "Homo Politicus" and reveals some jabs Milbank takes at Washington journalists:

  • Weekly Standard editor William Kristol is "choragus of a pro-Bush chorus," whose cheerleading for the Iraq war "was reaching that of a Dionysian orgy."

  • Milbank's best specimen? Political analyst Mark Halperin, now with Time, whose online political Note for ABC News gave "the impression that the most important person in all Potomac Land was Halperin himself."

  • (On Woodward) "The man who brought down Richard Nixon is Potomac Land's authoritative choragus," Milbank writes. Then he strikes: "When he broke the Watergate story in the 1970s, he was seen as an 'adversarial' writer, working without access to the most powerful figures. Over time, however, he became the choragus most often favored by the powerful as an outlet for their own tales."

And Mike Allen reveals this in Playbook:

      11) SECONDS: Dana Milbank's "Homo Politicus: The Strange and Scary Tribes That Run Our Government" -- release says on sale Jan. 3; Amazon says Dec. 26 -- quotes Ed Henry's Washingtonian magazine write-up of a Washington institution, a Juleanna Glover Weiss party: "NEWSWEEK's Michael Isikoff is dishing out rapid-fire anecdotes in one corner while top Republican lawyer Ben Ginsberg shares war stories in another. An aide to Hillary Clinton, Philippe Reines, is chatting up Vice President Dick Cheney's spokeswoman, Jennifer Millerwise, near the front door." Milbank adds, deadpan: "Henry later scored a party in his honor when he moved to CNN."

Dana's book has no index, explaining: "Upon picking up a book, Potomac Man turns immediately to the index, where he searched for his own name and then reads those pages that mention him."
