Congress and the Fourth EstateAs if there weren't enough places and panels to debate journalism in Washington, have no fear: Congress is here. Now the U.S. Congress has always been filled with some relatively random caucuses--the Airport Noise Caucus, the Bi-Partisan Bike Caucus, the Philatelic Caucus, the Interstate 69 Caucus, and the Empowered Communities Caucus to name a few--but today's "Under the Dome" column, penned by the underrated news hounds Al Eisele and Jeff Dufour, reports on the latest entry to the crowded random caucus market: The 12-member Future of American Media Caucus. The caucus, chaired by Reps. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), Louise Slaughter (D-NY), Soon-To-Be Sen. (?) Bernie Sanders (I-VT), David Price (D-N.C.), Jay Inslee (D-WA) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH), the caucus "will provide a venue where reasoned debate, expert analysis, and diverse points of view can come together to address critical media policy issues." "The FAM Caucus will help Congress monitor media outlets as technology advances and the way news and information is distributed evolves. Competition is critical to ensuring diversity and accountability in news reporting," Brown said in the release announcing the caucus's formation. The Hill wonders whether the caucus will be able to attract Republicans given their first big event will be a forum with TV journalist Bill Moyers, one of conservatives' favorite targets. Personally we can't wait to see Sanders host a forum with Sean Hannity. Email This Post |
