Politico.com Launches

politilaunches.jpg

The Politico hit the streets today and Politico.com hit the Web just before 5a.m. this morning. The site is divided into the following sections:

  • Congress
  • Politics '08
  • Lobbyists
  • Idea
  • Happy Hour
  • Ideas
  • Video

The big stories out of the first issue include Roger Simon's interview with Sen. John McCain and Ben Smith's piece on Sen. Hillary Clinton's efforts to woo the black vote.

One of the first things that sticks out to you on the website is this not-so-subtle dig at the Politico's competitors:

See tons more in our Politico Day One review when you click below...

First, the website seems relatively easy to navigate, easy on the eyes and sprinkled with some interesting features / links / etc. on each page.

    These include...

...a daily schedule of Politico media appearances

...an invitation to readers to submit op-ed pieces:

...an invitation to readers to submit news:

    politicoyoureport.jpg

    ...video.

(Thought: Maybe put up a "Print Edition" link somewhere? Or a link to the print edition's cover image?)

Speaking of video, John Harris, in the homepage video, mentions that there may even be a Politico TV show. Stay tuned...

On the website, one of the more enjoyable features is cartoonist Matt Wuerker's caricature of Politico employees:

    Mike Allen:

    Anne Schroeder:

    Patrick O'Connor and John Bresnahan:

    Jonathan Martin:

    Ben Smith:

    Roger Simon:

Of course, no first day is without its first day jitters and there were a few when the site went live this morning, including your standard fare of error screens...

    politicoerreornotfound.jpg

    politicoerror3.jpg

    politicoerrornotfound.jpg

    ...HTML issues...

    politicoerrorquote2.jpg

    ...and some formatting problems.

And even though they managed to spell gossip columnist Anne Schroeder's (who will write "Shenanigans") name wrong, we're psyched that, in one video feature, she has her web browser pointed to the right site.

What do you think? Send us your thoughts all day and we'll get them up later (but please limit them to constructive, thoughtful criticism or positive feedback...we won't publish ones that seem them purposely mean or baseless).

I think you can concede this much:

It's a lot better than we thought it'd be (ahem):
