"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones

Michael Crowley: The FishbowlDC Interview

crowleyfbdcint.JPGSay hello to TNR's Michael Crowley.

What word do you routinely misspell? zenzizenzizenzic

What's the name of your cell phone ring? I don't know.Something purportedly jazz-like.It's the least annoying ring I could find--but it's still pretty annoying.

What time did you get up this morning? The worm is overrated.

When did you last cry and why? Last Friday, when I found out there's no Santa Claus.

How many emails do you receive a day, roughly? At least 50 percent too many. I dream of pulling a Moby (although even he couldn't pull it off)

What's your favorite letter? Any one that includes a check. If you mean the alphabet, I suppose X has the most personality.

What single person played the biggest role / had the biggest influence on your journalism career? It's impossible to name one. A semi-answer would be the amazing crew around me at the Boston Phoenix in the late 1990s, which now includes a Pulitzer Prize winner; a two-time Pulitzer finalist and New York Times reporter; a Boston Globe metro columnist; a GQ editor; and two well-known former) media critics. Plus a guy who taught me more about scratch tickets than I could possibly ever want to know.

Read the rest when you click below...(and see previous FishbowlDC interviews: Julie Mason, David Shuster, Joe Curl, Alex Pareene, Peter Beinart, Jonah Goldberg, Megyn Kendall, Ana Marie Cox, Jim Brady, Howard Mortman, Amy Argetsinger, Jose Antonio Vargas, Chuck Todd, Tom Gottlieb, Kelly Ann Collins, David von Drehle, David Lat, Mark Leibovich, Zain Verjee, David Plotz, Paul Kane, Karen Travers, Mark Halperin, Hugo Gurdon, Greg Kelly,Ken Rudin, John Dickerson, Anne Schroeder, Spencer Ackerman, Bret Baier, Bob Sellers, Greta van Susteren, Danielle Jones, Jonathan Salant, John McCalla, Pam Hess, Ryan Grim, Marc Ambinder, Marty Kady, Jack Shafer, Annie Lou Bayly, Jerry Zremski, Charlie Cook, Dave Hughes, Howard Fineman, Katie Tarbox, Mark Segraves, Chris Cillizza, Tom Sietsema, Bill Triplett, Robin Givhan, David Brody, Norah O'Donnell, Carl Cannon, Jordan Lieberman, David Folkenflik, Molly Henneberg, Ernesto Londono, Brody Mullins, Aaron Blake, Martha Raddatz, Andrew Sullivan, Christina Bellantoni, Shane Harris, Nora McAlvanah, Adam Nagourney, Erin McPike, Mike Memoli, Ju-Don Marshall Roberts, Arthur Delaney, Chris Mincher, Rachel Sklar, Laura Sullivan, Jeff Kosseff, Matthew Cooper, Scott McCrary, Dan Reilly, Jennifer Griffin, Ari Shapiro, Jonathan Kaplan, Rick Klein, Mike Allen, Olivier Knox, Erik Wemple, Nathan Burchfiel, Andrea Mitchell, Mike DeBonis, Anne Kornblut, April Ryan, Amy Morris, Keith Koffler, Mark Silva, Ann Compton, Mark Knoller, Betsy Fischer, Katherine O'Hearn, Pamela Brown, Beverly Kirk, Wendell Goler, Glenn Kessler, Susan Page)

Also, drop us a line to let us know who else you'd like FishbowlDC to interview. They must work in the Washington area and you must include their email address.

When's the last time you volunteered? Where? Sigh--this is not my best attribute. I do try to donate generously, though.

Who is your favorite active journalist? I could name a couple dozen people but since he has an awesome new book let me say that Jonathan Chait has an X-ray vision for essential political truths which, when combined with a brilliant wit, is in a class of its own.

What did you have for breakfast? My enemies. No, I usually stick to coffee, sometimes with toast or a banana. Riveting, eh?

What one toiletry item could you not live without? Given how frequently TSA confiscates them, I've learned to get by without most. No toothpaste is pretty horrible, though.

If you could have one superpower, which one would it be? The ability to clone myself--as long as I could control my clones so they don't turn on me after getting stuck with all the grunt work.

Red or white wine? Either will usually do (as long as it's not chardonnay).

PG-13 or R? Has there ever been a PG-13 movie worth seeing?

Lincoln, Jefferson or Washington Memorial? Lincoln--for the view back down the Mall.

Leg or breast (chicken, of course) McNuggets

Friday night or Saturday night? Love'em both

"Wedding Crashers" or "Old School" Old School--but neither holds a candle to truly great comedies like Spinal Tap, Bananas, Animal House,Holy Grail, etc.

The Palm or Cafe Milano? Neither. L'Enfant on 18th St?

Yankees or Red Sox? Ugh. That's like the Iran-Iraq war.

Jenna or Barbara? Nothing good could come from answering that.

McSteamy or McDreamy? Not a fan, sorry. McFly?

Leno or Letterman? So definitely Letterman.

Stewart or Colbert? Stewart

Boxers or briefs? It depends upon what the meaning of the word 'is' means. If 'is' means 'is, and never has been,' that's one thing. If it means, 'there is none,' that was a completely true statement.
