NEWSPAPERS

FT: Google has considered buying a newspaper or using its charitable arm to support news businesses seeking non-profit status, but is now unlikely to pursue either option, Eric Schmidt, chairman and chief executive, said.

WSJ: Debt-laden newspaper publisher McClatchy Co. announced plans to exchange $1.15 billion in notes at a significant discount. A crushing advertising environment has been especially hurtful to McClatchy, which went on a debt-fueled growth spurt just before ad revenue turned south.

Check out yesterday's Ask the Post. Apparently WaPo will not be expanding in Baltimore, despite the state of the Sun there.

TV

So, Rush Limbaugh did not get his wish. TVNewser notes MSNBC's Keith Olbermann mentioned his name over and over again on last night's "Countdown," concluding with his own promise: "I will go 30 days on this program without referencing what has been done, or said, or boasted about, by Rush Limbaugh. Provided you go 30 days on your program without mentioning what has been done, or said, or boasted about by... Rush Limbaugh. Hannity would last longer on the waterboard."

Did you know Chris Matthews is a big softy for animals?

ONLINE

E&P has the Top 30 News/Current Event Sites for April- HuffPost and Fox both gain. MSNBC.com continues to secure the top 30 current event and global news destination sites in the month of April. Meanwhile, NYTimes.com, which is generally ranked in the top five, dropped down a bit to No. 6 with 16.5 million uniques with year-over-year decline of 8 percent.

NEWS NOTES

Why did Katie Couric anchor from DC last night? She was in town for the American News Women's Club 15th gala and Helen Thomas Award Dinner. She received the award and was roasted by colleagues and friends at the Fairmont. We'll have the dets posted later today.

REVOLVING DOOR

As noted first on Playbook this morning- Tucker Bounds ("who has America's best name short of Tiger Woods") of Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign, will now be communications director for Meg Whitman, the former eBay CEO, who is running for the Republican nomination for Governor in California.

Author and Soviet-era political dissident Valdimir Bukovsky joins the Cato Institute as a senior fellow. From the release: "Vladmir personifies the struggle for freedom that animates the Cato Institute's mission," said Cato founder and president Ed Crane.
