Morning Reading List, 05.16.07

morningsun.gifGood morning Washington.

  • It's a close call, but it seems D.C. car noise pollution is not that bad.

  • An ABC release announced, "For the third straight week, ABC's 'World News with Charles Gibson' was the #1 evening newscast among Total Viewers, Households and Adults 25-54. The last time that ABC won three consecutive weeks in both categories was more than ten years ago in November 1996."

  • Who's the least likeable Washingtonian? The Plank investigates.

  • The PEJ News Coverage Index for the week of May 6-11 shows "GOP Worries About Iraq Fuel War Policy Coverage."

  • Washington Business Journal reports, "AOL LCC is acquiring Third Screen Media, a company whose technology sends ads to mobile devices, for an undisclosed sum."

  • A reader sent us some FNC Debate set photos. Check them out here.

  • Bloomberg reports that Rupert Murdoch is offering the Bancrofts a seat on board of News Corp., "in an attempt to help convince members of the family that controls Dow Jones to support his $5 billion takeover bid."

  • The Wall Street Journal reports, "Features like most-viewed, most-popular and most-emailed lists democratize news and information, advocates say, letting consumers play a role in what's deemed worthy of others' attention, taking it out of the hands of an unseen editorial elite. Now, though, a diverse group of actors -- ranging from spyware makers to a venture-backed start-up -- is helping push specific videos, articles and photos to the top of those lists."

  • The Wall Street Journal also reports that television networks are turning to blogs "to create buzz."

  • MinOnline has the skinny on "what the media bosses earned in 2006."

  • CNN Money reports, "According to figures from research firm Dealogic, 372 mergers in the traditional media business (print, broadcast and cable TV, radio and movies) have taken place so far this year across the globe. Eighty-one of those were for U.S.-based companies." Except Viacom has no part in it... at least for now.

  • E&P reports, "Tribune Co. reported Monday that its April 2007 advertising revenues fell 10.3 to $217 million from $242 million a year ago, pushed by softness in all categories including a 20% plunge in real estate classified."
