"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones

Morning Reading List, 08.15.07

morningsun.gifGood morning Washington.

  • It's close, but you think Sarah Silverman is in fact funny.

  • An ABC release reports, "ABC's 'World News with Charles Gibson' was the #1 evening newscast among Total Viewers, Households and Adults 25-54 for the week of August 6-10. This marks the fifteenth time in sixteen weeks that "World News" has finished first in these categories. Averaging 7.81 million Total Viewers and a 2.0/8 among Adults 25-54, the broadcast outperformed NBC's 'Nightly News' by 320,000 Total Viewers and 130,000 key demo viewers."

  • "In September, when you take that mediabistro.com class you've had your eye on, you'll also get a Mediabistro On Demand video for FREE."

  • "JibJab is launching a new product Thursday morning called 'Starring You!' that lets people upload photos and put themselves (and friends) into JibJabs." Check it out here.

  • Ad Week reports, "Drawn from a Harrison Group survey of 2,200 consumers 13 to 75 years old, the topline findings of the 'State of the Media Democracy' offered hope for traditional media and yielded some fresh insights into new-media trends, according to Ed Moran, director of product innovation in Deloite's New York office."

  • Info World reports, "Nothing lasts forever. And while Google is riding high on the crest of a wave, there is an almost imperceptible undercurrent that could spell trouble for the search giant's future." Meanwhile, PCWorld reports, "For the first time, Google has lost its crown to Yahoo as the highest-rated search and portal site in a key customer satisfaction survey."

  • CNet News.com reports, "Let's see how funny Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are on the witness stand. The two comedians are apparently being dragged into the copyright fight between their employer and Google. Entertainment conglomerate Viacom, the company behind Stewart's The Daily Show and The Colbert Report filed a $1 billion lawsuit against Google last year, alleging that Google and YouTube encourage users to pirate copyright material."

  • Bloomberg reports, "Time Warner Inc., the world's largest media company, had its share price target cut 17 percent by top- ranked media analyst Michael Nathanson at Sanford C. Bernstein, who cited slower growth at the AOL Internet unit."

  • Multichannel News reports, "Current TV, the news and information network, Wednesday will premiere The Daily Fix, the first music blog for television."

  • The PEJ News Coverage Index for the week of August 5-10 shows, "The fate of six miners trapped 1,500 feet underground followed two storylines last week as rescuers rushed against and the mine company owner took his case to the public. But three presidential debates and the Iowa straw poll pushed the 2008 presidential campaign in the top spot."

  • New York Business.com reports, "Conde Nast Portfolio, whose long awaited second issue hits newsstands Wednesday, is fine tuning Portfolio.com, which is still in beta mode. The site might consider adding a proofreader."

  • Talking Biz News reports, "More than three out of every four tech reporters surveyed said they read blogs on a regular basis, according to a study released Monday by Fusion PR."
