"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones

Morning Reading List, 10.12.07

morningsun.gifGood morning Washington.

  • You slackers. You check out 4 to 9 non-work websites a day.

  • NBC News announced, "Matt Lauer has secured the first network television interview with Idaho Senator Larry Craig since he pled guilty following an arrest after controversial events in a Minnesota men's room this past summer. In September, Craig announced his intent to resign as Senator, and then embarked on a legal war maintaining his innocence. Lauer will also interview the Senator's wife, Suzanne Craig, who will be speaking publicly for the first time about the incident and the events that followed."

  • An NBC release announced, "After six months of construction, more than 200 miles of cable pulled, 280 high definition monitors and six high definition projectors installed, NBC News will flip the switch on its new World Headquarters on Monday, October 22, when it combines the New York based operations of NBC News and MSNBC under one roof and begins broadcasting from the newly-renovated Studios 3A and 3C. In addition to the studios, this world-class newsroom of the future will house the editorial and production staffs for nearly all of the NBC News and MSNBC programs, the newsdesks of NBC News, NBC News' Specials unit and the east-coast MSNBC.com editorial operation."

  • Media Matter's Eric Boehlert writes, "The media's comical obsession earlier this month with the tone and frequency of Sen. Hillary Clinton's laugh didn't just represent another head-smacking moment in the annals of awful campaign journalism. It also served as a preview of what's likely to come in 2008."

  • Nathan's Q&A Cafe Wednesday lunch featured Howard Fineman. Check out the video here.

  • And speaking of Nathan's, Carol Joynt has been picked to be the Washington Observer for New York Social Diary. She will contribute an at least weekly column, titled "Washington Social Diary," focused on what's interesting in Washington, ranging from history to profiles to parties and events.

  • Addressing the magazine's latest cover, Radar Editor in Chief Maer Roshan said in his November Editor's Letter. "With a series of very real crises unfolding around the world, one might assume that the American public would have lost its taste for homegrown theatrics. But from its Survivor-like setup ('A black guy, a woman, and a Mormon duke it out for our nation's highest office!') to its canned media controversies, the 2008 campaign seems to have taken a turn down Sunset Boulevard."

  • AP reports, "Carl Bernstein took reporters at a news conference to task for not spending enough time on stories when he found out many weren't staying to listen to his speech."

  • Check out the Hitwise News and Media Category Weekly Report for the week ending October 6.

  • BizBash reports, "Glass, stainless steel, and dark wood details lend a modern look to Wolfgang Puck's first Washington restaurant"
