"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones

This Week In Pool Reports

Who knew that the VPOTUS is a champ on a no sleep? Also, this week's pool should be lesson to all poolers -- don't wear the scrubby socks.

  • "Potus and motorcade arrived at Nationals Park about 7 pm. He disappeared for more than an hour for clubhouse visits. After both the Braves and Nationals were introduced on the field (Nats'starters came in from outfield), and after Denyce Graves sang the national anthem, the two teams cleared the field. Nationals manager Manny Acta, Bryan Zimmerman and owner Ted Lerner came back on. Then Bush emerged from the Nationals' dugout to throw the first pitch. He wore a red Nationals jacket and dark slacks. It seemed there were more cheers than boos, but not by much. He walked quickly to the mound and almost immediately, with a high delivery, threw ahigh fastball that would have been a ball to anyone other than Yao Ming. Acta rose to catch it, manager and president quickly shook hands and Bush was waving to the crowd as he walked back into the dugout. The crowd reaction after the pitch was decidedly mixed. Bush, back in the dugout, gave the ball to team President Stan Kasten and he went back up the tunnel. Bush smiled throughout, despite the boos. We're told Potus is watching the game from the owner's box and will do ESPN commentary in the third inning. It is now bottom of first and pool is watching from what appears to be a press conference room." -- Jason Embry, Austin-American-Statesman

  • "One tip from today's trip: If you need a phone number, call information. POTUS visited a credit counseling service here to promote his administration's efforts to help homeowners crunched by the mortgage crisis. Help is just a phone call away, he said. 'I want my fellow citizens, if you're worried about your home, to call this number -- 1-88-995-HOPE,' he said. 'Let me repeat that again -- 1-88-995-HOPE.' Um, where did the missing '8' go? Hard to say. But as POTUS shook hands with guests afterward, Danny Cerchiaro, a homeowner from Iselin, N.J., cited in POTUS's statement whispered something in his ear. POTUS promptly went back to the lectern. 'Danny just told me I've got to get the number right,' POTUS said sheepishly. '1-888-995-HOPE.' There we go." -- Peter Baker, The Washington Post

  • "From the land of long driveways and shoeless reporters, we bring you our latest update. POTUS was wheels up in Ohio at 4:20 p.m. and back on theground in Pennsylvania at 4:49 p.m. He then took a long motorcade ride to an isolated stretch of woods where they grow the houses big and the mud deep. POTUS arrived for the fundraiser at 5:30 p.m., riding past the combination-lock gate and along a curving driveway that went at least a quarter mile and perhaps as much as a half mile deep into the woods.(Picture your pool vans making their way back down the narrow lanes backward and you begin to get a sense of how the day has gone.) The sprawling, light-brick mansion where the fundraiser was held is owned by Claude Kronkand his wife Laura, according to Carlton Carroll." -- Baker

  • "Your pool was taken, eventually, to another nearby mansion, where the scruffy scribes and our photographer brethren were politely asked to removeour shoes lest they mess up what looked to be some exquisite rugs. A good lesson not to wear those holey socks to work. We were well fed for the trouble, then brought back to the motorcade and on the move again at 6:57p.m. After another bumpy drive down narrow, woodsy lanes we arrived back at AF-1 at 7:29 p.m. We're preparing now to take off for home." -- Baker

  • "Your pool held in the home of a generous and hospitable neighbor who didn't object to all the hacks and flacks tramping through the house, raiding the refrigerator and tuning into 'X-Files' on the giant flat-screen television with surround sound in the basement. POTUS was back in the motorcade and onthe road at 1:19 p.m., heading back to the air base for two hours of private meetings with families of the fallen." -- Baker

  • "What jetlag? VPOTUS didn't let a little fatigue from his 10-day mid east trip -- he just got back last night around 11 p.m.-- keep him from going to the Pentagon. So a bigger than normal motorcade departed the White House at 9:48. POTUS, VPOTUS, Hadley and Bolten all rode in the same limo." -- Jon Ward, The Washington Times
