Some of you may have noticed that pool reports have still been distributed this week, despite the White House Correspondents' Association's recent decision to limit distribution of them. (See our earlier coverage here, here and here).

WHCA President Ann Compton met with eight local bureau chiefs from small newspapers on July 1 (NY Times D.C. Bureau Chief Dean Baquet was there, too) to talk about the policy. The origin of the problem -- "the straw that broke the camel's back," as Compton put it to FishbowlDC -- occurred in late June when only two newspapers -- the Washington Post and the New York Times -- stepped up to travel pool duty for month.

The conversation went well, Compton says, and since then, "they've been amazing," with smaller newspapers stepping up to do pool duty. As a result, a decision was made to continue pool reports for the G8 Summit. Another example: Hearst Newspapers (which was present for the July 1 meeting), which provided pool coverage from Monticello (a helicopter trip, so it did involve some expenses).

Still, Compton made it clear that the WHCA has not rescinded its earlier decision.

HERE'S A QUESTION: Will journos opposed to the plan set up a third-party loophole through the new policy? Like they'll email blast them to those NOT on the list? Or have them posted on a place like, oh, I don't know, FishbowlDC?
