Probably unnoticed by just about everyone but the editors who sit on the wires all day, today marks the debut of a new Associated Press feature called "Inside Washington," an "occasional series on the people, some of them not so well known, who make Washington work."

An editor's introductory note explains: "In Washington, countless people make things happen, whether they are well known or little known. Some exercise the power of government at its highest level, others exercise the power of ideas. Some do critical tasks that enable others to bring a law into existence, make war or get their voices heard in the clatter of the capital. And some are just making a living, attached by happenstance to those of influence."

This week's first profile, written by Nancy Benac, is about Charles Blahous (whom you might remember as one of the anonymice from earlier on this blog), President Bush's point man on Social Security.
