FBLA 20 Questions: David Seidman

davidseidman.jpg

After a year, FBLA has revised our insightful yet banal questions. David Seidman comics writer, consultant, and publicist volunteered to test drive the new version.

1. What's the first thing(s) you read in the morning?
My e-mail, followed by MediaBistro's job listings and home page. (Honest. I'm not just sucking up.) Then it's on to The Beat, Heidi MacDonald's comics-related news column at Publishers Weekly, the blogs of my colleaguesPeter David and Mark Evanier, the day's Doonesbury strip, and often the political blog Crooks and Liars.

2. What's your favorite guilty pleasure website? There are two: Defamer and Go Fug Yourself. I don't usually like celebrity gossip or fashion bitchery, but they're both funny. And theyusually have pictures of good-looking women.

3. What job do you fantasize about having? I'm usually too busy for much fantasizing (about jobs, that is), but the most fun for me is conceiving and developing new projects, particularly in publishing. Put me in that job and surround me with people who want to do the same thing and have the talent to accomplish it, and I'm a happy guy.

4. Last movie you saw? All the way through? (I catch a lot of bits and pieces on TV.) Probably the HBO documentary ALIVE DAY MEMORIES.

5. Last book you read? 300 by Frank Miller.

6. Best show legendary biz/movie star encounter. Fred Astaire. Iwas walking to work at the Beverly Hills Public Library one morning, and as I glanced down an alley, there he was. The sun behind him cast him into silhouette, but I would've known that jaunty gait anywhere. The first day I saw him, I was too startled to speak. Fortunately, I caught him again a few days later and asked him, "Pardon me, but aren't you Fred Astaire?" He said that he was, and I told him that I wanted to thank him for all of the fun that his movies had given me. He thanked me, we shook hands, and we went our separate ways. It wasn't much of an encounter, but I was so excited that I wasn't much good at work for much of the morning.

7. Proudest media moment?
I'm not sure what a "media moment" is, but here's a sampling of things that I think qualify.
• Appearing on Art Linkletter's HOUSE PARTY when I was seven. I still have an audio recording of it somewhere.
• Arranging the panel discussion / press event / party, complete with birthday cake and a celebrity guest or two, at the San Diego Comic-Con for Claypool Comics' 10th anniversary.
• Doing the tour for my book HOLIDAY LIGHTS (about the wild ways people electrify their homes for Christmas), the publisher sent me out dressed up in a top hat, cummerbund, and bow tie, all of which lit up, plus a tuxedo shirt and a red satin jacket. I looked like a demented ringmaster. I appeared on TV morning shows throughout the country and at one point did a live remote stand-up in the pre-dawn snow in front of a bizarrely decorated house. What a way to sell books.

8. Ever had a brush with the law? Describe. Only a few traffic tickets. No Paris/Lindsay/Britney madness for me.

9. If you got a unicorn what would you name it? Revenue Stream.

10. What does your TiVo think about you? I don't have TiVo. Don't shoot me.

11. Character of fiction you most resemble? I'm very taken with the first line of Scaramouche: "He was born with the gift of laughter and the sense that the world was mad."

12. Who plays you in your bio-pic? A younger Richard Dreyfuss.

13. What's your ringtone? Just the straight ring that the phone company delivered when I bought the phone.

14. Favorite electronic device? My DSL modem, otherwise known as my connection with the universe.

15. What do your friends say is your best quality? Beats me. Ask them.

16. What do your enemies say is your worst? I have enemies? Yikes.

7. What natural talent do you wish you had? Flight or maybe mind-reading. Outside of super-powers, I'd like better social skills. And sanity. I've got some, but I'd love more.

18. What's your theme song? I don't have one, but I am partial to Kinky Friedman's "They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore."

19. Do you believe in love at first sight? Yes, but falling in love is easy. Finding the right person to love and securing her love for you is much harder.

20. When's the last time you volunteered? Where? I'm ashamed to say it, but I really haven't done much volunteer work, unless you count donating blood. I do that one a lot.
