ABC Hires its Own Sanjay Gupta

Just a warning — you might want take a shower after reading this. Inexplicable slime can be hard to wash off.

CNN has Sanjay Gupta. NBC News has Nancy Snyderman. And now ABC News has acquired its own Sanjay Gupta with the announcement of Dave Zinczenko (almost as hard to spell as BuzzFeed‘s Andrew Kaczinksi) as their new Nutrition and Wellness Editor. He’s currently the consulting editorial of Men’s Fitness.

“David is a well-respected expert who for decades has guided millions of people to makehealthier [sic] choices,” states a release.

Well-respected, maybe. But then that depends who you’re talking to. A claim to fame: He dated actresss Rose McGowen for three years. Some downsides to Zinczenko: He owns a restaurant with his BFF Mediaite founder, ABC News legal analyst and “wingman” Dan Abrams (if you can stomach it, read “The Dan and Dave Show” in the NYT Style section here) and in 2011 Gawker exposed him for using old Men’s Health articles for his “Eat This, Not That!” column for Yahoo! Health. He can be credited to saying the single worst thing we’ve ever read about Abrams’ bout with testicular cancer. After Abrams was diagnosed, he ran into his good buddy Zinczenko, who said, “Hey Dan, you don’t look so great,” followed up with, “You look terrible, lighten up. It’s not like you have ball cancer.” If that crack wasn’t horrible enough, after he realized his friend actually did have ball cancer, he said he and Abrams later met at Elaines and laughed it off. He said it–no joke–”created a bond.”

Zinczenko is the author NYT bestsellers The Abs Diet and The 8-Hour Diet. His company recently announced a major deal with Random House for a new series of healthy lifestyle books. For 12 years he was the editor-in-chief of Men’s Health and editorial director of Women’s Health and Prevention magazines.
