About Yesterday’s NPC Wright Appearance…

The journalist juice…

At the outset of most of the National Press Club’s Newsmaker events,
the moderator offers a disclaimer to the C-Span audience: that applause you hear may be from guests “and not necessarily from members of the working press.”

Never were those words more appropriate than before Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s address Monday morning. Loud applause, standing ovations and shouts of affirmation interrupted Wright’s speech and his answers to the questions posed by USA Today’s Donna Leinwand, the club’s vice president, despite her pleas to hold applause so as to get to more questions.

Even some members of the media in the balcony galleries got into the
act, shouting “Amen” and “Say it!”

Wright returned to Leinwand’s disclaimer on more than one occasion.
When he said that the attacks on him were really attacks on the black
church, he got a big hand, which he said, “comes not from the working
press.” Then when he received applause for commenting that black
preaching is “not bombastic” or “controversial,” but just different, he said, “We had one or two working press clap along.”

Finally, he referred to Biblical history — something “which many of
the working press are unfamiliar with.”
