Amy Morris: The FishbowlDC Interview

amy laptop.jpg Say hello to Amy Morris, executive editor of Federal News Radio (AM 1050).

What word do you routinely misspell? Aggrivate. Aggrevate. Aggr..ah, screw it.

What’s the name of your cell phone ring? Default.

What time did you get up this morning? 5 a.m. every weekday. Weekend wake-up times vary wildly.

When did you last cry and why? (Sigh) — okay. FINE. I do cry. I cried last Thursday. It is how I relieve stress. Never at work, never in front of anyone, but a couple of times every month I just have to take ten minutes alone. It is merely stress release. Don’t tell anyone, okay?

How many emails do you receive a day, roughly? About a hundred, give or take.

What’s your favorite letter? X. It is also a kiss. Or a signature. Or a mystery man.

What single person played the biggest role / had the biggest influence on your journalism career? Wow. To be honest, I have learned something from every news director, every editor I’ve ever had, and from my colleagues in each newsroom. I’m sort of a mutt, aren’t I? If I have to name names. Dr. Kent Sidel at the University of South Carolina.

When’s the last time you volunteered? Where? Every Thanksgiving I try to help out with a lunch line either at a shelter or a senior living facility. I also used to regularly volunteer with Laubach Literacy in Action – a group that helps adults learn to read or improve their reading skills. But nothing in a while. Okay. Sign me up for something. Quick.

Who is your favorite active journalist? Nobody beats Bob Schieffer. He’s the man, the master. I also have tremendous respect for NBC’s Lisa Meyers. I’d love to meet her someday. I try to never miss any of Scott Pelle’s work.

What did you have for breakfast? Half a grapefruit and coffee.

What one toiletry item could you not live without? My toothbrush.

If you could have one superpower, which one would it be? When I ask him, “what are you thinking?” he is compelled to actually tell me.

Red or white wine? Shiraz, actually. South African or Australian. But last February I stopped drinking. When I start again, you can bet the first whiff of demon alcohol will be from a lovely glass of Jip Jip Rocks. (Wow. My mouth is watering.)

PG-13 or R? Movies=PG-13. My life=PG, with the occasional R thrown in for good measure.

Lincoln, Jefferson or Washington Memorial? Washington. Dig the shape and stature.

Leg or breast (chicken, of course) Leg. All about the dark meat.

Friday night or Saturday night? Saturday.

“Wedding Crashers” or “Old School” Um…”Anchorman…”?

The Palm or Cafe Milano? C’mon. I’m just a simple news monkey.

Yankees or Red Sox? Braves, Nats, O’s, in no particular order.

Jenna or Barbara? I’m sure they’re both delightful.

McSteamy or McDreamy? Um…Bono.

Leno or Letterman? I’ve had a secret crush on David Letterman ever since he had a daytime TV show (anyone remember THAT show?) Also, what ever happened to Craig Kilborn? Rowwwrrrr.

Stewart or Colbert? Colbert is my homeboy from SC, so I’m going to vote for him. Again, I direct you to the original host of the Daily Show, my other secret imaginary boyfriend Craig Kilborn.

Boxers or briefs? Boxers. If he has the legs for it, boxer-briefs.
