In this episode of “Cubes,” we tour the worldwide headquarters of IPG Mediabrands, the media holding company responsible for $34 billion in global revenue from advertising agencies such as Universal McCann. IPG’s work includes the Geico Gecko and Volkswagen’s pint-sized Darth Vader.

The IPG headquarters is home to a cutting edge media lab full of “Minority Report”-esque marketing technology, and the office includes a high-tech workspace dubbed “the desk of the future” and a skyway stretching 10 stories above the street that was once used by the Gimbels department story, the building’s previous tenant.

“People outside of Washington, you know they come on high school trips, they think it’s all like movie sets.  They think it’s all like ‘The West Wing,” longtime political columnist Frank Rich, who is an executive producer on the new HBO series “Veep,” said in the first part of our “Media Beat” interview with him, talking about DC.

“In fact, it’s a lot of oftentimes young people jockeying for power, doing mundane jobs, trying to stab each other in the back… and often in offices that look crummy” (video below).

Cubes: Take a Behind-the-Scenes Tour of The Knot

In this episode of “Cubes,” we tour the offices of XO Group Inc., the media company best known for every bride-to-be’s favorite site, The Knot.

The XO Group’s brand-new space in lower Manhattan boasts a fashion runway, a bar with a kegerator, a giant projection screen for playing Xbox Kinect, and a staircase inspired by the ones found in Apple stores. Oh, and it has really good feng shui.
