Coming just hours after the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Daily News announced massive cuts, the New York Times Company has announced that it will cut 500 positions, including 160 (35 in the newsroom) at the group that runs the Boston Globe and 45 NYT newsroom jobs.

“The Company plans to manage the staff reductions in such a way that we continue to provide our readers, users, listeners and viewers with journalism of the highest quality and that our operations function smoothly on a day-to-day basis. This will help ensure that we achieve our long-term strategic goals,” Arthur Sulzberger Jr. and Janet Robinson wrote in a memo to staff today.

That, we’re sure, is of little comfort to the numerous heads on the chopping block. Reports from the Boston Globe, NYT, and Inky D.C. bureaus are grim as everyone wonders what lies ahead….
