Brandus to Back Overseas Press Club Award

The Overseas Press Club of America’s Whitman Bassow Award for International Reporting on Environmental Issues has a backer. Today they announce it will be funded for the next five years by Paul Brandus, President of Middleburg, Va.-based Montrose Group LLC and owner of the White House-based news service West Wing Report. Brandus is a member of the White House Correspondents’ Association. He reports for media outlets around the United States and overseas.

The awards gala will be held on April 28 in Manhattan at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Among the award presenters is Sabastian Junger, who produced the war doc, “Restrepo.” Other news: Bill Keller, executive editor of NYT, will receive the President’s Award for lifetime achievement, and Kati Marton, widow of Ambassador  Richard Holbrooke, will light the traditional candle commemorating journalists who gave their lives in the past year.

Obligatory quotes: Says Overseas Press Club of America President David Andelman: “We’re very grateful that Paul has agreed to fund this very important award and we deeply appreciate his generosity.” Says Brandus: “My goal is for this award to encourage and incentivize thoughtful reporting on what I believe is one of the most important issues of our time.”
