Campaigns & Elections magazine today announced the launch of its Editorial Advisory Board, which includes leading authorities from across the political and public affairs spectrum. Board members will help ensure Campaigns & Elections magazine remains true to its mission of educating, informing, entertaining and connecting all those who touch politics. We are proud to announce the Editorial Advisory Board, the newest members of the C&E team:
Tony Fazio is president of Winning Directions, a national direct mail firm. He has over 25 years of experience working on hundreds of campaigns in the political communications industry and has created many winning direct mail programs for candidates, labor organizations and campaigns all across America. Fazio started working in his younger days as a grocery clerk, in a union-organized supermarket in Providence, R.I. After moving to the Bay Area in 1968, he worked on the docks as a longshoreman in Oakland, organized community groups with ACORN in South Dakota and Citizens Action League in California, worked as a union organizer for SEIU, and was the COPE director for the San Francisco Labor Council. Fazio started his first national direct mail company in 1981 and started Winning Directions in 1989. He has also volunteered his time and held numerous positions with statewide and local community groups in California. A longtime member of the AAPC, Fazio joined the organization’s Board of Directors in 1992 and is currently the president of the organization.
Benjamin Ginsberg is national counsel and senior advisor to the Romney for President Committee and was national counsel to the 2000 and 2004 Bush-Cheney presidential campaigns. Ginsberg, a partner at Patton Boggs, LLP, represents political campaigns, candidates, members of Congress, state legislators, governors, corporations, trade associations, vendors, donors and individuals participating in the political process.
Donald Green, PhD, is the A. Whitney Griswold Professor of Political Science at Yale University, where he has taught since 1989. He is also director of the Institution for Social and Policy Studies at Yale. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science and history from University of California, Los Angeles (1983) and a doctorate in political science from University of California, Berkeley (1988). His scholarship covers a broad array of topics, such as campaign finance, party identification, rational action, voter turnout and prejudice. His three books are “Pathologies of Rational Choice Theory: A Critique of Applications in Political Science” (Yale University Press 1994) co-authored with Ian Shapiro, “Partisan Hearts and Minds: Political Parties and the Social Identities of Voters” (Yale University Press 2002) co-authored with Bradley Palmquist and Eric Schickler, and “Get Out The Vote! How to Increase Voter Turnout” (Brookings Institution Press 2004) co-authored with Alan Gerber. Green is also a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Wayne Johnson is president of JohnsonClark Associates, headquartered in Sacramento, Calif. Johnson has 25 years of experience in politics and public affairs, and currently serves as chairman of the 1,000-member American Association of Political Consultants, a post to which he was elected unanimously by both the Republican and Democratic caucuses. Johnson has extensive domestic and international political experience and was an American member of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Political Consultants.
Kenneth Khachigian is a Southern California attorney and founding partner of the Los Angeles law firm of Smiland, Khachigian & Chester. He holds a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia University and is an honors graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara. Khachigian has participated in eight presidential campaigns, five of them at senior strategic and staff levels. Khachigian has been described by Time magazine’s Hugh Sidey as Reagan”s “word wizard,” by Newsweek as a “lusty polemicist” with a “gift for Reagan’s gab,” and by the Associated Press as a speechwriter “regarded as perhaps the best Reagan has had.”
Mary Matalin formerly served as assistant to President George W. Bush and counselor to Vice President Dick Cheney. After a hiatus from Washington to attend Hofstra Law School, Matalin returned to the RNC in 1984, to serve as national voter contact director for the Reagan-Bush campaign. She held senior positions in George H. W. Bush’s 1988 campaign and, upon his election, was appointed chief of staff for the RNC. In 1992, Bush named her the deputy campaign manager for political operations. As deputy campaign manager, she was responsible for the overview and organization of all 50 state operations. As the on-board planner who traveled with Bush throughout the 1992 campaign, she emerged as the vocal, and occasionally controversial, defender of the president and his policies. In addition to frequent political commentary on NBC, CNBC and CNN, Matalin also co-authored the best-selling political campaign book “All’s Fair: Love, War and Running for President” with her husband, James Carville.
Dick Morris is perhaps America’s foremost political consultant and a very influential commentator. Widely credited with piloting Bill Clinton to re-election in 1996 and helping him to regain the center ground of American politics, he has also consulted for leaders of both parties including Sen. Trent Lott. Domestically, he appears frequently on the Fox News Channel and, with his wife, Eileen McGann, writes weekly columns for the New York Post, The Hill and foxnews.com. Morris and McGann have authored five best-selling books: “Condi v. Hillary,” “Because He Could,” “Rewriting History,” “Off with their Heads” and “Power Plays.” They also consult for foreign political figures such as Mexico’s former president Vicente Fox and Ukraine’s Viktor Yuschenko.
James Pindell covers presidential politics for The Boston Globe. He followed his passion of politics by reporting on it in five states, two of those being the early presidential states of Iowa and New Hampshire. The Washington Post called him the “Insider’s Insider” for his coverage of New Hampshire politics and the state’s first-in-the-nation presidential primary. Prior to joining the Globe, he ran PoliticsNH.com, a New Hampshire political news Web site for four years. He writes a monthly column for Campaigns & Elections magazine and is an adjunct professor at New England College in Henniker, N.H. He also provides political analysis for New Hampshire television and radio stations on a regular basis. Before New Hampshire, he covered the Iowa caucuses for the Des Moines Register and was the statehouse bureau chief of the Morgantown (W.Va.) Dominion Post.
David Rebovich, PhD is managing director of the Rider University Institute for New Jersey Politics. Born and raised in Perth Amboy, N.J., Rebovich received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Johns Hopkins University and a master’s degree and a doctorate in political science from Rutgers University. He served as secretary of the Northeastern Political Science Association for 10 years and is a past president of the New Jersey Political Science Association, from which he received the Distinguished Service Award. Rebovich is the author of several professional articles, book chapters and papers and a long time political commentator for television and radio. He is also a public affairs columnist. He has written over 800 articles for The Times of Trenton, the Trentonian and the Philadelphia Inquirer. In 2001, he received the New Jersey Press Association’s award for an outstanding weekly column.
Jeanne Shaheen is the director of Harvard’s Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, a post she has held since July 2005. Established in 1966 as a memorial to President Kennedy, the mission of the non-partisan Institute is to unite and engage students, particularly undergraduates, with academics, politicians, activists and policymakers and to stimulate and nurture their interest in public service and leadership. Shaheen was elected governor of New Hampshire in 1996, becoming the state’s first woman governor and the first Democrat elected governor in the state in 16 years. As chief executive, she focused on education, health care and the expansion of high-tech business in New Hampshire. From 2000-2001, Shaheen chaired the Education Commission of the States, making early childhood education the priority of her chair’s initiative. She served three terms as governor, winning re-election in 1998 and 2000 and is only the fourth governor in New Hampshire state history to serve three terms. In 2002, she was narrowly defeated in her bid for the U.S. Senate. After leaving office, Shaheen served as a senior fellow at the IOP and at the Tufts University College of Citizenship and Public Service. She chaired Sen. John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign and is currently on the board of the Nellie Mae Education Foundation.
James Thurber, PhD is the distinguished professor of government and director of the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies at the American University. He was the principal investigator of a seven-year grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts to the Campaign Management Institute to study campaign conduct. Thurber has been on the faculty at American University since 1974 and was honored as the University Scholar/Teacher of the Year in 1996. He is a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. He is author and co-author of numerous books and more than seventy-five articles and chapters on Congress, congressional-presidential relations, congressional budgeting, congressional reform, interest groups and lobbying and campaigns and elections.
David Yepsen is a political columnist for the Des Moines Register and is widely recognized as an expert on the Iowa political scene. As a political writer for 30 years, Yepsen has covered campaigns and elections in Iowa and the legislative business at the Iowa General Assembly. Yepsen has come to be known for his expertise on the Iowa caucus and is a frequent contributor on national news programs. Yepsen’s widely read column appears three times weekly in the Des Moines Register. Yepsen has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa, Iowa City and a master’s degree in Public Administration from Drake University. Additionally, Yepsen was awarded a fellowship in 1989 from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
